Saxophonist Maria Torres Melgares (b. 1998 in Barcelona, Spain) is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in saxophone performance at the University of Michigan, where she studies with Dr. Timothy McAllister.
In June 2020, she obtained a Bachelor of Music degree in saxophone performance from the Fundación Conservatorio Superior del Liceo, where she studied Albert Julià. She was sponsored throughout her undergraduate studies with prestigious scholarships including the Young Promises and Excellence Scholarship by the Ferrer-Salat Foundation, which she won three times. She has taken lessons with numerous renowned saxophonists including Jean-Marie Londeix, Kenneth Tsé, Lars Mlekusch, Vincent David, Jean-Yves Fourmeau, Christian Lauba, Pawel Gusnar, and Christian Wirth, among others.
Maria has won several individual prizes, both at the national and international levels, including 1st Prize awards at the Concorso Internazionale de Filadelfia, Italy, and the Concours de Saxophone Parisien, France; 2nd Prize at the Festival Internacional de Saxofones de Palmela, Portugal; and the Hans-Schaeuble Award at the Arosa Music Academy, Switzerland, resulting in a performance at the Arosa Klassic Festival in 2021 with the famous baroque recorder player, Maurice Steger. Additionally, she was a finalist of the Concurso de Juventudes Musicales de España, Spain
She is a member of the Fließen Duo with pianist Xavier Ricarte, which won 1st Prize in Chamber Music at the IV Premi de Música Ciutat de Mataró. They also have performed in the concert series Afinitats in the Sala Parés Concert Hall in Barcelona. She also takes part in the Barcelona Sax Project ensemble. She has premiered several new works for saxophone quartet and duo, and she took part in a project named “Putting Picasso to Music,” playing new pieces based on Picasso’s works in his museum.
She has been selected to participate in the European Union Young Woodwind Orchestra (EUYWO), resulting in tours throughout France, Luxembourg, and Germany. She also has been chosen to perform a concert in the 3rd European Saxophone Congress in Italy in 2022.
